Gaidar Forum 2021: Leaders as Beacons of Good

Gaidar Forum 2021: Leaders as Beacons of Good

What kind of the post-pandemic world do we have to live in? How do you prepare for it if the preparations were to have started yesterday? Why should a leader in today's world take on not only social responsibility in the form of implementing social and charitable projects, but also become a source of knowledge and education? Why does a leader of today need coaching competencies?

These were the issues tackled on the second day of Gaidar Forum-2021. Among the participants in the discussion were Mark Kukushkin, business trainer, senior partner at Training Boutique, Viktoriya Shimanskaya, Doctor of Psychology, co-founder of SKILLFOLIO, Artem Metelev, chairman of the Association of Volunteer Centers, member of the Russian Public Chamber, and Anna Zavalina, head of Pedagogy at Senezh Management Workshop. The discussion was moderated by Maria Afonina, Vice Rector for Educational Activities at Senezh Management Workshop.

The world has changed a lot during the pandemic, some new challenges and new formats of social interaction emerged. The speed of change is so high that there is simply no time required for structuring and formalizing the new knowledge into textbooks, manuals and books. The time needed to develop algorithms for action that will help meet the new challenges has been greatly reduced. Professionals face the situation when algorithms are evolving in the "here and now" mode. Consequently, the mission of broadcasting the skills of teaching to learn has been vested on leaders, those who take risks and are the first to make a new decision in the new reality. The importance of their roles and the specific purposes of their efforts increases manifold in a situation of uncertainty. They inspire hope and confidence in people, becoming a reference point and an example. The question of how leaders transform the world in these challenging times, what they should know and be able to do, how they learn and how they should broadcast and share their lessons learned, is one of the most acute issues on the current agenda.

According to Artem Metelev, Association of Volunteer Centers, member of the Russian Public Chamber, there is a crisis of trust in Russia: "There is a great demand for trust in our country. According to sociological data, 78% of Russians, that's the majority of the people, do not trust each other. But at the same time 58-60% of the respondents are ready to unite and cooperate with strangers, if their interests coincide. Secondly, people are searching for a meaning of their lives. A religious meaning, the purpose of one's own existence, people just cannot find it.

In a situation of instability and uncertainty, flexibility and adaptability comes in handy for leaders. Neuroplasticity, that is the ability to develop your brain and form new neural connections, comes to the fore.  According to Viktoriya Shimanskaya, Doctor of Psychology, co-founder of SKILLFOLIO, it is through neuroplasticity that everyone can become mentally healthy: "You need to decide for yourself and put it into daily practice: what it is that I, as a leader, want to develop in myself: it's about the skills of emotional intelligence, understanding yourself, your emotions."

A transformation of the learning environment is necessary, and it should be performed on the basis of the paradigm "leaders teach leaders", "peers teach peers". Anna Zavalina, Head of Pedagogy, Senezh Management Workshop, “Russia is the Land of Opportunity” ANO: "The key is not to teach individual competencies, which are fragmented like pieces of a construction set, but to select those competencies in such a way that this construction set can be used to build a house."
